How Dental Bonding Can Help Your Smile

Find out how this simple cosmetic treatment could enhance your smile’s appearance quickly.

Our Lehi, UT, family dentist Dr. David Gordon understands how much your smile impacts your appearance and your confidence. Even the smilesmallest imperfections such as chips, stains, and cracks are problematic when you feel like everyone around you notices them every time you smile.

Fortunately, simple imperfections such as these don’t require lengthy or expensive cosmetic treatments. In fact, dental bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to hide these flaws and improve your smile.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is a non-invasive cosmetic technique that involves applying a tooth-colored resin over the area or areas of your smile that are flawed. This resin is the same material that’s used to fill a cavity. It’s moldable, which allows us to shape the resin over the flaw to improve the shape, size, or color of a tooth. Our Lehi, UT, cosmetic dentist will also choose the proper shade of resin to match your tooth.

How is bonding performed?

First our dentist will need to perform an oral exam to make sure that your teeth are healthy enough for cosmetic dentistry. Any active gum disease or tooth decay will need to be treated before getting dental bonding. We will also talk to you about the issues you want to treat with cosmetic dentistry to make sure that bonding is the appropriate option. We offer a range of cosmetic dentistry options that can be tailored to your needs.

Once we’ve determined that bonding is right for you, we will clean the tooth, dry it, and then apply a special solution over the tooth. This solution will roughen the surface of the tooth, making it easier for the bonding resin to stick to the enamel so we can shape and contour it. Then the solution will be rinsed off.

Next, we will choose the appropriate shade of resin and then apply it over the tooth where we will trim and shape it. It isn’t until we direct a UV light over the tooth that the resin will permanently hardened to the tooth in a matter of seconds. The last step is to polish the tooth so the resin offers the same sheen as the enamel. This process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes per tooth and can be performed in just one session.
