FAQ about Dental Implants

Nothing can compare with a natural tooth, however, dental implants can come incredibly close in both look and feel. Not only implants the most comprehensive dental restoration available today, they also help to minimize the risk of oral health problems such as bone loss, which can increase your risk of gum disease and other complications after tooth loss. Have you been wondered if dental implants are right for you? Then read on to learn some of the most commonly asked questions about treatment, and contact Gordon Family Dental here in Lehi, UT, if you are interested in scheduling a consultation.

Q: How do dental implants work?

A: A dental implant consists of two parts: the implant itself, which is a small, biocompatible screw that is surgically placed in the socket of the missing tooth, and an abutment, which is placed atop the implant. After the implant has fused with the surrounding tissue in the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration, a cosmetic crown is attached via the abutment.

Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple teeth, or a full set of dentures.

Q: How long do dental implants last?

A: It depends on each patient and their individual circumstance, but implants are inherently designed to be a long-term solution to tooth loss, lasting up to 20 years in some cases.

Q: Who should get dental implants?

A: Although most patients qualify for treatment, implants are not the right solution for everyone. In order to qualify, you must be an adult in good general health, with enough bone tissue in the gums to secure the implant. You must also be willing and able to commit to follow-up care, regularly practice good oral hygiene, and maintain proper lifestyle habits in order to ensure success and minimize the risk of potential complications.
